V Puppis (HIP 38957)

V Puppis is a blue bright giant star in the constellation Puppis. At 1,318 light years away, it shines at an apparent visual magnitude of 4.47. V Puppis is a multiple-star system and an intrinsic variable star that varies between magntitudes 4.28 and 4.82 over a period of 34.8 hours. It is moving through the Galaxy at a speed of 29.1 km/s relative to the Sun and is part of the NGC 2547 moving group. Its projected Galactic orbit carries it between 23,900 and 25,000 light years from the center of the Galaxy. It came closest to the Sun 9.0 million years ago when it had brightened to magnitude 3.83 from a distance of 983 light years.
